Round one review: Milan make their mark

Milan were the big winners in round one in every respect as their 4-0 demolition of Lecce and the failure of all of their other direct rivals to register three points would suggest. Milan were on fine form. Perhaps it was the galvanising though of Zlatan Ibrahimovic being in the stands, or of Robinho flying in to sign today. Pato weighed in with a superb brace, with Ronaldinho turning provider, while Thiago Silva tapped one in from close range. Pippo Inzaghi scored in yet another Serie A season on the 90 minute mark.

Roma and Inter both failed to capitalise in games against teams many would consider candidates for relegation. Cesena did anything but sit back at the Stadio Olimpico attacking Roma right from the off. Indeed, it was a game that they could have won in the final stages, as could have Roma however when Mirko Vucinic should have scored with a shot at his near post, but he was denied by a brilliant save. Inter, much like Roma, seemed flat in their debut but Bologna did well to hold on when all was said and done. Bologna keeper Viviano did brilliantly to deny Samuel Eto'o whose shot eventually cannoned off the bar.

Juve however were far from impressive with their new look side down South against Bari. Bari took the lead just before half time with an inspired drive from Massimo Donati, who turned his marker to leave Storari with no chance. Try as they might, Juve just could not conjure up much of any substance on the Bari goal. One drive from Fabio Quagliarella was all there was to right home about until Chielini's golden chance in injury time, a free header which he blew straight over the bar. Juve will look to respond against Sampdoria at home in round two.

Elsewhere Sampdoria got off to a good start against Lazio, despite being largely outplayed by the Rome club for the 90 minutes. Lazio were dominant in possession with new signing Hernanes impressing but a penalty and a defensive mix up gave Samp a 2-0 win on the night. Last seasons revelations, Napoli and Palermo both drew their opening games. Napoli will be more happy with their point, a 1-1 away to Fiorentina, while Palermo will see it as two points dropped in their 0-0 with Cagliari. Genoa, who have had a excellent mercato, were victorious away at Udinese thanks to a wonderful Mesto overhead kick late on in the match while Chievo continued to honour their flying donkey status with a decent 2-1 win over Catania, who were a much improved side in the latter stages of last season. Finally, Parma, who have added Seb Giovinco and Antonio Candreva to their side, beat newly promoted Brescia 2-0 with Valeri Bojinov on target.

Interesting. A bad opening defeat for Juve will have Luigi Del Neri under pressure already, while Milan with their new additions will surely compete for the Scudetto. Roma, much like last year, have started slow but with Marco Boriello joining today will have an array of options up front. Of course, much like any season, things will become much clearer when we reach game ten.
