Europa League: Abysmal night for Rome

Both sides of Rome will be hanging their heads in shame tonight after dreadful defeats to fired up opposition. Lazio crumbled to a 2-1 defeat at home to Red Bull Salzberg thanks to some sheer diabolical defending that made me want to play myself. Really, it has to be seen to be believed. Lazio went ahead in the first half through a super Foggia strike but the old disease of last season surfaced when a defensive blunder allowed Red Bull to draw level. It went from bad to worse though as Cribari headed the ball in the area directly to a Salzberg player. Shocking. 2-1. Enough said, embarrassing.

It was just as bad for Roma though, as they crashed 2-0 to Basle in Switzerland. Genoa though restored pride by beating Slavia Prague by 2-0. Zapater gave Genoa the lead with a freekick, his second of the season. Its becoming a trademark for him. Sculli added a second in the 39th minute to wrap up the win as they head to Valencia next.

So, a disappointing night. Really, I thought Id be talking about three wins here tonight. It can't be stressed enough that if you take it easy in Europe you will be undone. The defeated teams will look to bounce back and they will have to in order to qualify. Well, now onto the league at the weekend.

  1. A rumour going around my local is that former Crystal Palace Dynamo Bruce Dyer is mulling over a move to Lazio. What a story!
