Champions League: Juve take a solid point, Milan confirm they are a shambles

Bayern Munich 0-0 Juventus
Juve took a solid point from Bavaria. The Bavarian side had the better of the early going with Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery going close. Juve were under pressure but started to get into the game with in form Mauro Camoranesi going close testing the Bayern keeper. All in all, this was a tepid affair. Both teams cancelled each other for large periods and Bayern's creativity took a hit when Arjen Robben was forced to go off after half an hour or so. After the break, both teams had chances. Vincenz Iaquinta blazed over from the D confirming that perhaps he is not up to the task at this level. He did have an excellent effort go just wide later on, when he took the ball on the turn, but in the end both teams settled for a point.

AC Milan 0-1 FC Zurich
Quite simply, one of the worst results in AC Milan history. Abysmal. It could have been 1-1 in the dying embers as Zambrotta hit the post with an almighty volley, but even 1-1 would have been poor. In a week where Juve and Fiorentina have flown the flag of Italy high, Milan have embaressed it. Already at San Siro, its time for a change. Yes, Milan may not have the quality of old but its still a great side on paper. The coach is simply not getting the best out of it. With ex Roma coach Spaletti waiting in the wings, is it already time for a change?

Europa League look ahead
An interesting set of games for the Italian clubs tomorrow. Lazio head to Sofia to play Levski in a must win clash after defeat in round one. Roma host another Bulgarian team in CSKA Sofia in another must win clash for them after defeat in round one also. Both Capital clubs must make amenze and get themselves back into a qualifying position. Its imperative they take this seriously. In the other game, Genoa head to Valencia. Genoa are top of that group on three points with Valencia and Lille next level on 1 point. Despite their quality going forward, having seen Valencia play this season its evident that they are weak at the back. Genoa are strong everywhere, and perhaps Crespo will start to give them some European pedigree up front. It also is a return to the Mestalla for Emiliano Moretti who now wheres Genoa colours. This game is live on ESPN at 8pm. Roma also kick off at 8, while Lazio begin at 6pm UK time.

Champions League: Solid start to Euro week round 2

Rubin Kazan 1-1 Inter Milan
Inter picked up a solid point against the Russian Champions Rubin Kazan after going down to ten men. Rubin took the lead through a stunning Dominguez goal after just 11 minutes as the player weaved his way through the Inter backline. Inter though leveled through a well taken Dejan Stankovic header on 27 minutes. But, any hopes of them pouring forward were ended when Mario Balotelli was sent off as he brought down a Rubin player in a late challenge for his second yellow card.

Fiorentina 2-0 Liverpool
Fiorentina put in a fantastic performance against 2005 European Champions Liverpool. Fiorentina were dominant from the start with Vargas, Mutu and Jovetic especially looking dangerous. It was the latter that gave Fiorentina the lead after he beat the offside trap and slotted past Reina to the bottom left. It was 2-0 on 37 minutes with Jovetic again the scorer. Vargas has a shot from distance that Jovetic connected with to tap it past Reina for a goal similar to the one that he scored against Palermo. 2-0 it remained, as Fiorentina picked up three points. They must now make the most of their next two games against Hungarian side Debrecan, and six points there could put them top of the group with two rounds to go.

New Stadium
Roma have announced the plans for a new stadium that will see them move away from the Olimpico by 2014. The capacity is believed to be around 55,000-60,000. With construction already well underway on Juve's new stadium this is positive news for Italian football. The only question that remains in who will be next. Lazio, Inter, Fiorentina, Genoa, Palermo, Siena and Napoli have all be rumoured to have plans to move to new stadia.

Week 6: Sampdoria clear at the top

Sampdoria 1-0 Inter
Sampdoria are totally clear at the top of Serie A. They responded to their 2-0 defeat away to Fiorentina midweek by beating Inter Milan by 1-0 at the Marassi. It was a tight and tense affair as I think we all thought it would be. Last year Inter visited Samp here twice, being held 1-1 on opening day and then getting mauled by Samp 3-0 in the Coppa Italia. Saturday night turned out to be no different as Inter left the Marassi again defeated. The first half was tight, few chances were created. But, in the early going of the second half Diego Milito had the best chance of the match so far, but again just as he did against Barcelona he failed to keep his footing at the vital moment. Inter went close again with an outstanding Samuel Eto'o effort later on. His shot went just wide from 25 yards as Castellazzi was beaten. However, Sampdoria took the lead moments later. Manini, an inspirational signing from Napoli, again proved his worth by threading through to Pazzini who left Julio Cesar with no chance at all. Inter thought they had equalised late on as Quaresma's deflected effort went in off Lucio, but the latter was in an offside position. It finished Sampdoria 1 Inter 0.

Juventus 1-1 Bologna
Juventus failed to capitalise on Inter's defeat the night before, but they do move back above them in the table. Diego returned and Trezeguet started up front for Juve alongside Amauri. Del Piero also returned late on to give Juve a plethora of options up front. However, it was Trezeguet that gave Juve the lead as Zebina set up the Frenchman to slot home. Juventus continued to pile on the pressure as Felipe Melo tested the Bologna reserve with a piledriver from distance. However, Bologna fought back and Buffon again had to continue his good form to keep Juve in front. However, it was not to be for the old lady as Adailton equalised in stoppages on the volley to leave Buffon with no chance. 1-1 at the end.

Milan 0-0 Bari
Bari produced an inspirational performance to continue Milan's slump in form. Despite an excellent win against Marseille in the Champions League, Milan have continued to struggle in Serie A. Huntelaar and Ronaldinho started up front for Milan, but it was a fruitless partnership as it was Bari, through Rivas and Baretto, who began to tear the Milan defence to shreds. Thanks only to their goalkeeper Storari Milan salvaged a point from this one.

Lazio 1-1 Palermo
Lazio came from behind to take a point of Palermo, but it really should have been three points today for the capital club. Lazio were controlling possession right from the start and Mauro Zarate forced a good save out of the Palermo keeper early on. Foggia to did the same, only for Kjaer to have to clear off the line to prevent Julio Cruz from heading into an empty net. It was all Lazio, and after the break that continued. Mauro Zarate wasted a guilt edged opportunity to put Lazio in front as his timid effort was saved by the keeper when clean through. After, Palermo had a fantastic chance to equilise but Cavani passed it into the hands of Muslera instead of the boot of Simplicio. Yet, against the run of play Palermo took the lead thanks to a Muslera howler. Cavani fired a shot from distance that he should have stopped, but it rebounded of his hand into the net. Lazio poured forward and Rocchi went close twice, before Zarate fired home from an uncleared free kick in the Palermo area. 1-1. It should have been 2-1 Lazio moments later but thanks to the brilliance of Palermo keeper Sirigu who saved from Zarate again it remained 1-1.

Elsewhere
Cagliari stunned Parma with a 2-0 away win to take them up to seven points in the table as Allegri continues to work his magic with the Sardinian club. Roma through Danielle De Rossi rescued a point late on after sensation Morimoto had give Catania the lead. Napoli continued their good home form by beating Siena by two goals to one. Marek Hamsik scored his 4th anf 5th goals of the season to give the Napoli faithful three points. Fiorentina coninued their quite passage up the table with another win to move them level with Inter Milan on 13 points. Stefan Jovetic scored his third goal of the season to give Fiorentina the bragging rights in the Tuscan derby over Livorno. Antonio Conte's Atalanta registered a second point in two games thanks to a tough away draw against Chievo, it could have been three after they took the lead by Chievo talisman Sergio Pellisier leveled late on.

Finally, in one of the games of the round in form clubs Udinese and Genoa clashed in Udine in which Udinese won by 2-0. Antonio Di Natale scored his 8th goal of the season in just 6 games, and Simone Pepe added late on to move Udinese up to 5th in the table.

Week 5 Serie A: Juve and Genoa play out a classic

A short round up tonight of the midweek action, short but sweet some may say.

Inter downed Napoli by 3-1 at the San Siro, Sammy Eto'o put Inter ahead early on and Milito added soon after with another well taken finish. Lucio made it 3-0 towards the end of the half, with Lavezzi pulling one back for a clearly disjointed Napoli side. Donadoni not far away from the sack on evidence of this performance. City rivals Milan lost away to Udinese, a side picking up form in their own right. Di Natale registered his seventh of the season in just five games. Can he go close to 30 goals one wonders and join luca Toni in the only player to surpass the barrier since the 50s?

Roma and Palermo played out a stunning 3-3 draw, while city rivals Lazio slumped to another defeat after not getting out of second gear as Parma picked up the three points in a 2-1 victory. Mauro Zarate did open his account though. Fiorentina though picked up a great three points against early pace setters Sampdoria, with Stefan Jovetic and Alberto Gilardino on the score sheet. It was a far cry from their abysmal performance against Roma at the weekend.

After a stunning start, Bari rather predictably slipped up against strugglers Cagliari as Nene, the top scorer in Portugal last season, scored his first goal in the Italian top flight for a 1-0 away win. Bologna though finally put three points on the board, with Marco Di vaio amongst the goals in a 2-0 win at home to Livorno who look set to struggle this season. Two teams perhaps emerging from their initial struggle, Atalanta and Catania, played out a 0-0 draw in Bergamo in Antonio Contes first game in charge of the Northern outfit. Siena and Chievo did the same, registering a 0-0 draw and a point each. After two straight defeats at the start of the season, Chievo have picked up seven points and now move up to 8th in the table. They face Atalanta on Sunday, so maybe their success will continue.

Finally, in the game of the round Juve traveled to Genoa and picked up a point in a 2-2 classic. Genoa went behind early on thanks to a fantastic Vincenzo Iaquinta goal, but leveled through a stunning Mesto header and then took the lead thanks to Hernan Crespo. His second half bullet header left Buffon with no chance. Juve after had two goals correctly disallowed, but managed to level through substitute Trezeguet. Perhaps this is something they would not have done last season, perhaps they would have collapsed to a defeat like they did last year. A point in the bank, as Juve join Inter at the top and Genoa move up to joint fourth place.

Atalanta: Conte takes over

Another former Juventus great turns his hand to football management in the big time. Ciro Ferrara and Didier Deschamps are leading Juventus and Olympic Marseille at the moment and now Antonio Conte takes the reins at Atalanta. Of course though, this is not his first stab at management. The former Lecce player took over at Bari and guided them to promotion last season.

Its been a woeful start to the season for the Bergamo based club. Four defeats in a row, most recently to Bari, spark the need for change in Atalanta and Conte could be just the man for the job. The 4-1 defeat to Bari was an absolute hammering. To be fair it could have been 5 or 6 goals to Bari such was the dismal defender that Atalanta produced. Despite it being just week four, it was undoubtedly time for change and with fellow strugglers Catania up next for them it will be important to claim the three points. But is Conte the man?

Antonio Conte
Despite being inexperience in Serie A as a head manager he has worked as assistant manager at Siena before so he will have some idea of the ongoings at a club that battles against relegation. But, Atalanta are definately something more than this. At worst they are a midtable team, perhaps finishing anywhere between 15th to 10th place. No way should they be rooted to the bottom of the table, so Conte will need to get them out of this mess quick. Still, he would it seems have the calibre to do just that. Last season he inspirationally guided Bari to the top of Serie B and now the fruits of his work are to be seen in the fact that Bari are sitting on six points and undefeated at only week four.

The Cagliari example
True, last year Cagliari lost their first five games and turned it around without the need to sack the now widely regarded excellent manager in Massimo Allegri. But, does lightning ever strike twice I wonder. Personally, it is in my opinion a good move Atalanta. They may have just nipped a dismall start in the bud with the signing of Conte and perhaps he will inspire them to three points tomorrow night against Catania.

Week 4: Juve and Sampdoria roll on

Both Juventus and Sampdoria retained their 100% records as they won their fourth Serie A game on the trot. Milan picked up three points, Lazio stopped the rot, Ranieri lifts Roma and the pressure mounts on Donadoni and Zenga.

Top Tier: Juventus 2-0 Livorno, Sampdoria 4-1 Siena, Chievo Verona 3-1 Genoa
Juventus cruised to a win at the Stadio Olimpico grande. In form Vicenzo Iaquinta headed Juventus into the lead after just eights minutes as an injury ravaged Juve began with promise. No Diego, no Melo, no Del Piero but it was 2-0 soon enough. New Italy international midfielder Claudio Marchisio moved down the left straight and cooley chipped the goalkeeper to show why he is a very important cog in the Juve machine. Livorno were not out of it though, and they tested Buffon twice through Lucarelli and again after the break against a Fillipini effort. Yet again, Buffon saved the impossible shot from a point blank range effort from Danilevicius. Juve took the points, and Buffon displayed some truly world class goalkeeping.

Sampdoria hosted Siena as they looked to maintain their truely fantastic start before they face Fiorentina on wednesday evening and then an almighty clash with Inter next saturday. They wasted little time in going ahead and after half an hour they were two goals to the good thanks to Angelo Palombo and Daniele Manini. Padalino came on and made it three before former Cagliari man Fini pulled one back for Siena. Late on Padalino finshed it off with his second of the match.

Genoa visited Verona to take on an unpredictable Chievo and they left their 100% record in the Bentigoti. Chievo again put on their giant killing hat as they established a two goal lead over Genoa early on. Sergio Floccari pulled on back, but talisman Sergio Pellissier made the points safe late on.

Capital Action: Roma 3-1 Fiorentina, Catania 1-1 Lazio
It was another eventful weekend for the capital clubs, as Roma demolished Fiorentina by 3 goals to 1 and Lazio somehow rescued a point from Catania. Roma wasted little time in putting pressure on Fiorentina and captin Francesco Totti gave them the lead from the penalty spot after Gamberini was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Totti doubled their lead not long after as he smartly volleyed home for 2-0. Totti was again at the heart of goal number three as he crossed into the area for De Rossi to smash a header in from the penalty spot to leave Frey stranded. Fiorentina were punch drunk and luckly for them half time arrived. Roma stepped of the gas for the second half, and later on Fiorentina pulled one back through Gilardino who turned Mexes well and fired home for 3-1. It should have been 3-2 moments later as Gilardino spectacularly volley just wide, but Roma took the points.

Lazio took their game to Catania as they looked to put two consecutive defeats behind them. But it was Catania who started the brighter and took the lead through a superb Martinez effort as he left keeper Muslera with no chance as he blasted a well worked move into the top corner. Lazio were stunned and Catania poured forward looking to add a second, but they nearly drew level through a snap shot from outside the box by Roberto Baronio who drilled inches wide. After the break Lazio should have drawn level through Julio Cruz but he completely miss hit a Kolarov assist. It looked like another defeat for Lazio, but inspirational midfielder and Italy international Pasquale Foggia waltzed through the Catania defence and provided a cross on a silver platter for Julio Cruz to head home with a diving header. However, just when it looked like Lazio would dominate, Catania got back into the game and had chance after chance to take the three points. Bad finishing, and Lazio keeper Nando Muslera ensured that Lazio took home a point.

Milanese victories: Cagliari 1-2 Inter, Milan 1-0 Bologna
Both Milan clubs racked up three points. Inter came from behind after Jeda had put them infront. Diego Milito scored twice in the second half to give Inter three points in a stadium where they were defeated last season. Milan played a decent game of football and finally made the breakthrough against Bologna thanks to a wonder goal by Clarence Seedorf. However, Milan fans continue to make their displeased state of mind felt with the performance of the team, as only 35,000 showed up at the San Siro on sunday compared to the usual league average of around 60,000.

Pressure mounting: Parma 1-0 Palermo, Napoli 0-0 Udinese

The pressure is most definatelty mounting on both Palermo's manager Walter Zenga and Napoli equivalent Roberto Donadoni. Palermo failed to win away to a very well organised Parma side as Cristian Zaccardo headed them into a one goal lead as Parma move up to 5th in the table. Napoli failed to win again also, and really should have been beaten after Totto Di Natale put them ahead but the goal was questionably ruled out for offside. With Palermo hoasting an inform Roma next and Napoli heading to Inter it may not be long before the axe is wielded.

Brilliant Bari: Bari 4-1 Atalanta
Bari continue to roll on in Serie A and picked up their first full three points of the season as they now have 1 win and 3 draws to their name. They put four past Atalanta before their lone reply. Atalanta manager Angelo Gregucci was fired today and former Bari man Antonio Conte takes charge.

Sunday 20 September 2009

Ok, I have left it a few weeks just for this question to simmer up to boiling points, but who will win the Scudetto in the 2009/2010 season? Let your opinion be known in the comment box below and also in the poll on the website on your right hand side.

Will it be Inter again for title number 18, will Juve retain it for a 28th time, can Milan add their 18th title and take the Milanese bragging rights back to the red side of Milan? Will Roma spring a surprise, or will Fiorentina finally win a long awaited third Scudetto? Can one of the chasing pack, Lazio, Palermo, Napoli, Genoa or Sampdoria spring a huge surprise? Let me know what you think.

Its remains a massive week of Serie A action with round 4 today, 5 on Wednesday and Thursday and 6 next weekend.

Europa League: Abysmal night for Rome

Both sides of Rome will be hanging their heads in shame tonight after dreadful defeats to fired up opposition. Lazio crumbled to a 2-1 defeat at home to Red Bull Salzberg thanks to some sheer diabolical defending that made me want to play myself. Really, it has to be seen to be believed. Lazio went ahead in the first half through a super Foggia strike but the old disease of last season surfaced when a defensive blunder allowed Red Bull to draw level. It went from bad to worse though as Cribari headed the ball in the area directly to a Salzberg player. Shocking. 2-1. Enough said, embarrassing.

It was just as bad for Roma though, as they crashed 2-0 to Basle in Switzerland. Genoa though restored pride by beating Slavia Prague by 2-0. Zapater gave Genoa the lead with a freekick, his second of the season. Its becoming a trademark for him. Sculli added a second in the 39th minute to wrap up the win as they head to Valencia next.

So, a disappointing night. Really, I thought Id be talking about three wins here tonight. It can't be stressed enough that if you take it easy in Europe you will be undone. The defeated teams will look to bounce back and they will have to in order to qualify. Well, now onto the league at the weekend.

Champions League: Inter 0-0 Barcalona, Lyon 1-0 Fiorentina

Inter 0-0 Barcelona
Inter and Barca settled for a point in the game of the round. Barca, unsurprisingly dominated possession, but Inter arguably had the best two chances of the game which really failed to get into gear. Messi started well and ran through the Inter defence only for Cesar to pull off a solid save. Indeed Cesar was key again when he pulled a Messi header of the line. Messi was on fire and only a fantastic tackle from Chivu prevented him being through on goal. However, Inter began to settle and Diego Milito had a fantastic chance to give Inter the lead. His low shot was saved by Valdes, but with more power it could have been 1-0. After the break Sneijder had a good chance from distance and his shot went just wide. Barca though continued to dominate possession, but Milito wasted a golden chance later on. Eto'o played a wonderful ball through to Milito who slipped as he ran onto it into the area. If he had stayed on his feet it would have been a great chance to score. It was all Barca in the last ten minutes, but it finished 0-0. The other game in the group saw Dynamo Kiev beat Rubin Kazan 3-1.

Lyon 1-0 Fiorentina
Fiorentina went down to a disappointing defeat in france to Lyon. Disappointing as somehow Alberto Giladino was shown a straight red card for an elbow that simply did not happen. It was an extremely harsh decision and influenced the rest of the game as up until that point Fiorentina had had the best of the match. Gila was sent off on 45 minutes. Playing a whole half a man down the bubble finally burst on 76 minutes when Pjanic put Lyon ahead to give them the three points. With Liverpool up next, Fiorentina will have to put in a great performance to collect the three points.

Champions League: Marseille 1-2 Milan, Juve 1-1 Bordeaux

So, it underway and both AC Milan and Juventus played tonight as they looked to cement an early foothold in the group stages. Milan headed to Marseille to a fierce Stade Velodrome while Juventus hosted Bordeaux.

Marseille 1-2 AC Milan
Milan took three points thanks to Pippo Inzaghi and Clarence Seedorf. Inzaghi was his usual menacing self as he volley home a Seedorf cross in the first half and then again applied a cool finish in the 75 minute with Seedorf again applying the ammunition. In between Gabrielle Henize leveled the tie with a header, but this was and remains a crucial win the Milan. Three points away to perhaps the third best team in the group should set Milan up for qualification. The two games against Zurich should yield six points for Milan, so you would fancy them to battle Real Madrid for the top spot in group C. Indeed, Real won away to Zurich 5-2 with Cristiano Ronaldo on the mark twice. Next up for Milan in FC Zurich at home on the 30th of September, so with Madrid up after that the game against Zurich remains a must win for Milan.

Juventus 1-1 Bordeaux
The Turin faithful will be disappointed tonight. After a blistering start to the season, they could only manage a point against French Champions Bordeaux. Juve were without Diego, Del Piero and Sissoko but in a tough group it was vital that Juve got off to a winning start. Juventus took the lead in the 63 minute through Vincenzo Iaqunita as Fabio Cannavaro assisted for Iaquinta to bury from the right side of the box. It looked as if this was going to be enough for Juve, and somehow Bordeaux keeper Rame managed to prevent it from being 2-0 to Juve when he scooped an Amauri header from off the line. Moments later, Juve were regretting the goalkeepers brilliance as Bordeuax equilised through Plasil. However, there were strong suspisions of offside. Juve went close in the closing stages as Marchisio hit the bar and Poulsen missed a sitter. For Juve this is disappointing as Bayern Munich now sit top of the group on three points after beating Maccabi Haifa 3-0 away from home. Bordeaux face the whipping boys next while Juve are away at Bayern in a massive game. A game that even in the early stages of the competition they cannot afford to loose. Its early days, and Juve can win anywhere on their day especially with Diego fit, but they will be disappointed with just the point.

A look at tomorrows games
In the game of the round Inter Milan face Barcelona, the current Champions of Europe. Where better for Inter to begin. If they can win at home tomorrow night it could kick start their campaign and give them the confidence they need to go all the way. Fiorentina interestingly travel to the same stadium in France, Gerland, that they began their campaign at last year to face Lyon. Fiorentina have been solid if unspectacular this year but tomorrows game represents a great chance stamp their authority on the group. With Liverpool expected to win at home to Debrecen its vital that Fiorentina do not loose to Lyon. A win over the direct rival for second place would be magnificent. Thats for tomorrow though.

Monday 14 September 2009

Week 3: Juve, Genoa and Sampdoria roll on

Juventus, Genoa and Sampdoria continued their winning starts to the Serie A season by making it three wins from three over the weekend.

Saturday Games

Livorno 0-0 Milan
However, it was AC Milan that got the ball rolling this week as they took on newly promoted Livorno away from home. At half time in that one, Milan were lucky to still be in the game and it was only thanks to goalkeeper Storari that they were after he pulled off a number of decent saves from the Livorno forward line. Things improved after the break for Milan as Pirlo was introduced for Ronaldinho and Inzaghi for Huntelaar. Indeed, it was the deep lying play maker who nearly opened the scoring, crashing a 20 yard free kick off the bar. Inzaghi went close too as he hit the side netting late on and Tavano had a penalty appeal turned down, but it ended all square as Livorno picked up an impressive point at a packed Armando Picci.

Lazio 0-2 Juventus
In the big evening game, Juventus traveled to Rome for the second time in three rounds, but this time to face fellow high flyer's Lazio. Lazio though were without both of their first choice forwards in Mauro Zarate and Tomasso Rocchi and were expected to struggle, but that turned out not to be the case. Indeed, it was Lazio who started the brightest in terms of possession, though Juve did look more deadly on the break. Trezeguet went the closest early on, firing a strong effort tha Lazio keeper Muslera beat away. Again Juve went close, with Muslera tipping a Camoranesi effort from under the bar. Lazio were not to be outdone though, and went close themselves with a stunning run and effort from Kolarov that Buffon just pushed past the post. Baronio fired an effort on goal too, but there was bad news for Juve just before half time when Diego came off injured. Lazio though put the ball in the net through Mauri, but it was ruled out for a push by Cruz on Legrottaglie. The push was light and really the decision to rule out the goal highly questionable. In the second half Juve asserted their quality on the game, with Amauri and Trezeguet going close. However, Chielini should have been sent off for a second yellow when Foggia was hacked down on route into the area but it was not given. Not long after Juve went in from as Caceres who fired a hard drive into the bottom right. Lazio were on the ropes, and deep into stoppages Trezeguet wrapped up the win with a goal on the counter attack.

Sunday games

Inter 2-0 Parma
Samuel Eto'o made the difference in this tight encounter at the San Siro. Parma defender brilliantly at times and made the likes of Sneijder, Milito and Eto'os time on the pitch difficult by giving them next to no space. Parma goal keeper Mirante showed his quality early on by saving a Sneijder rocket and putting Eto'o off when he blasted wide. Parma had shut Inter down though, and played on the counter in the hope of a goal against the Champions. It was a proud effort and allowed them to go into half time level. After the break Parma played it much the same, it became in essence a game of chess as Parma tried to sneek one on the counter. Balotelli came on to introduce another attacking threat, but he balzed a golden chance over the bar when it would have perhaps been easier to score. Parma also had their golden chance when the promising Biabiany waltzed his way through the entire Inter defence but could only manage to aqcuire a corner. Just when it looked as if Inter would have to settle for a draw, Inter took the lead through a moment of pure magic from Sammy Eto'o. He turned his man and curled an unstoppable effort into the top right corner. Not to be outdone, Milito added one late on as he trapped a Balotelli cross and calmly fired home.

Siena 1-2 Roma
Claudio Ranieri's Roma picked up three points away at Siena, a ground that has proved tough for them in recent seasons. This was an essential three points for il Lupi as they face an unbeaten Fiorentina at home next week. Siena's inspirational Massimo Maccarone opened the scoring with a splendid solo effort, bypassing the Roma defence an applying a consumate finish. It looked to be honest a third straight defeat was on the cards. However, Roma leveled the game on 72 minutes through Philipe Mexes as Totti applied the assist and Mexes fired home. Siena were then later sent down to ten men, and this gave Roma the belief to pour forward for the three points, and it was Riise who rescued it for them with a freekick in the dying embers.

Genoa 4-1 Napoli
In perhaps the most entertaining clash of the Serie A season so far Genoa propelled themselves to the top of the table. This one had everything, from firecrackers to red cards, penalties to world class finishing. Both teams had early chances, with Genoa forcing De Sanctis into a great save when he pushed Criscito's pile driver wide of the post. Criscito however, was the source of the first major incident of the game as he was given a straight red for verbal abuse to the ref, although he denied this and stated after that he was muttering to himself and not the official. Ten minutes later and Napoli were in front after some brilliant football. Pass after pass eventually found its way to Hamsik who rounded the keeper and fired home from a tight angle for his third goal of the season. The lead did not last long though, as on the mark of half time the referee appeared to attone for his harsh red to Criscito by reducing Napoli to ten men and awarding a penalty when Campagnaro brought down Sculli. Floccari stepped up and converted for 1-1. After the break the tight tense affair continued, and Mesto gave Genoa the lead with a stunning finish from distance. A third for Genoa was added soon after, as Palacio found Crespo in the box who showed why he is still a world class finisher by applying a cool finish. Napoli were reduced to nine men late on when Aronica was adjudged to have brought down Palacio in the box. Kharja stepped up and conveted for 4-1. Genoa have begun where they left off last season. Beware everyone else.

Elsewhere
Palermo rescued a point at the death through Igor Budan after Bari took an early lead in Palermo. Bari remain unbeaten so far this season. Chievo put three points on the board by winning impressively in Bologna by two goals to nil, with Sergio Pellissier on the score sheet. Udinese came from behind twice to beat Catania by four goals to two. Antonio Di Natale scored a hatrick, taking him top of the goal scoring charts with six goals in just three games so far in this campaign. Catania remain pointless at the bottom of the table. Sampdoria, despite being down to ten men, won for the third week on the trot by taking three points of Atalanta. Again Cassano was the architect as he set up Manini for his second goal so far this season.

Finally, Fiorentina kept up their excellent start to the season. Alberto Gilardino opened his account for the season to give Fiorentina the three points and push them up to fifth in the table, two points off the sumit. Both Cagliari and Fiorentina have major tests next week though, as Fiorentina travel to Rome to play Roma while Cagliari host Inter Milan.

Week Three Preview: Early top of the table clash

Its back to Serie A after the international break and some top games have presented themselves for week three. Livorno v Milan is up first tomorrow, and Milan will look to put three points on the board after their debacle in the Milan derby. Klass Jan Huntelaar is set to start and will look to give Milan fans something to cheer about. Livorno though will not role over on home turf. Away at Napoli in week two they should have drawn level in the second half, there are goals in Livorno's side. Perhaps though its all about the evening game on Saturday night, as Lazio face Juventus in a top of the table clash at the Stadio Olimpico. Mauro Zarate is set to start after an injury niggle and will have to play well to outshine Diego, who opened his Serie A account with a brace in week two in this very Stadium against Roma. A packed Stadio Olimpico awaits this one, as these clubs continue their rivalry from last season when Lazio knocked them out of the Coppa Italia in the Semi finals. However, Zarate is not shy to rise to the ocassion and already this season has further shown why 21 million euros represents a real steel for Lazio. Stunning goals against Elfsborg and Real Zaragoza and a wonderful assist against Chievo make him a dangerous and unpredictable player.

Sunday: Normal Status resumed
2pm UK time Kick offs are back as Serie A plays the bulk of its games are again on Sunday afternoon. Parma travel to the San Siro to take on Inter as the fifth and sixth place teams face off. Inter will start as favourites, but Parma have quality and Paoloshi, Boijinov, Galloppa and former Roma player Panucci look to impose themselves on Inter. Siena, surprise winners away to Cagliari, face Roma at home. Roma may not be looking forward to this one. There record away at Siena is not great and new manager Ranieri can't afford to allow Roma to continue their loosing streak. Sampdoria travel away to face Atalanta who currently remain winless. Samp will look to continue to maintain their fantastic start, but Atalanta must start picking up points some when and Acquafresca could be the inspiration.

Elsewhere Fiorentina host a win less Cagliari, but the visitors wont be too worried. They were slow to start last year and when the click into gear the wins will start to flow. Fiorentina though, can they finally mount a credible title challenge.? If they are to do so, games like this must be won. Wonder kid Stevan Jovetic is showing all the promise that he genuinely can become one of the best players in the world. Stunning performances have come so far from him, more must follow. Bologna face Chievo in a huge six pointer at the bottom of the table. A win for either side, Bologna especially, could pull them already away from trouble.

Catania face another long trip to the North of Italy, this time to Udine. Both need points to kick start their season and both will see this as a winnable game. Palermo host Bari. Bari, unbeaten, face an almighty test in Palermo against one of the best home sides in the division. Palermo, with Cavani and Pastore, will look to cement a top four challenge early on in the season by moving up to six points. I still don't buy their target of winning the title. Theres nothing wrong with ambition, but they are a level bellow Inter and Juventus. Still, the season is long and Pastore could be the revelation of it.

In the late kick off game on Sunday night we have a real classic. Napoli head to north to play Genoa. Genoa, still with a 100% record, are brimming with confidence. The new signings have settled well and already Zapater, Moretti and co have made a noticeable difference. Still, Napoli are looking, like five or six other sides in Italy this season with Genoa included, to break into the top four. Quagliarella has confirmed why Napoli shelled out so much money for him already, and Hamsik is starting to put in outrageous performances every week. The goal against Livorno was reminiscent of a young Ricky Kaka. But theres more to Napoli than that despite their opening day defeat to Palermo. Argentine Internationals Lavezzi and Datolo look good so far and they appear much more solid at the back with De Sanctis between the posts.

Lega Pro Focus

My focus on the lower divisions continues today during the International break as I take a look at the Lega Pro, specifically Lega Pro 1A and 1B. For those that are unfamiliar, this division is the one below Serie B. Like any league set up in Europe within the bowls of this division are some famous clubs, clubs that have influenced and indeed even won Scudetto's.

Lega Pro 1A
Perhaps the most famous name, from recent memory at least, in this division is Perugia. That club holds huge significance for me as a Laziale, as there home stadium in May 2000 was where Juventus were beaten on the final day by Perugia, and pouring rain, by 1-0 to leave Lazio top of the table and thus Champions. Currently, Perugia have slipped down two divisions and have only won 1 of their 3 opening games. Another side that have sampled the bright lights of Serie A is Cremonese, and they have started well this season winning 2 out of their 3 games so far this campaign, falling only to their first defeat to Sorrento in the last round. Well, if you are to lose anywhere it may as well be in one of the most beautiful places in Italy. Top of the pile are Novara, a side I know little about but with three wins on the board out of three they look to be going places this season.

Lega Pro 1B
This division contains a number of teams that have fallen from grace in the last decade or so. Hellas Verona have started well, and it would be nice to see the 1985 Scudetto winners get back into at least Serie B this season. Their fans have remained faithful, they still average around 15,000 fans every week in the third division. In mant cases, this is more than Chievo Verona do in the top flight. Hellas remain unbeaten with a win and two draws. Foggia, the former stomping ground of Guiseppe Signori are also in this division and have mirrored the start of Hellas Verona as this former Serie A club looks to at least get into Serie B. Pescara, another side familiar with Serie A also have started well with one win and two draws, but it is Ternana that have done the best. They sit top of the table with three wins from three as they get an early grip on the Division. Its going to be a long and interesting season in the Lega Pro, can any of the former top division sides make a comeback to the respectable pastures of Serie B? Well, we will check back to Serie B and the Lega Pro in October during the next International break. For now, its back to Serie A.

Serie B Focus: Frosinone lead the way

Frosinone lead the way in the race for promotion to Serie B. Three wins out of three is an impressive start for the Lazio based side, but even more impressive was the manor of their win in Lecce at the weekend. A 3-1 away win down south confirmed perhaps that Frosinone will be a side to be reckoned with over the coming season.

In the rounds big game, Brescia defeated Torino to end their 100% record in the division by 1-0 thanks to goal scorer Francesco Flachi. The former Sampdoria ace, who netted over 100 goals for the Genoa based club, gave Brescia the three points to move them up to third place in the division. Could this be the season when Brescia return to Serie A after coming so close over the last two seasons?

Empoli, another yoyo club in Serie B, have given themselves a good start to their campaign by beating Crotone by 3-1, although they left it late to do so by scoring two of their three goals in the last 12 minutes of the game. Ancona are level also with Empoli on six points, picking up their second win of the campaign by beating Bergamo side Albinoleffe again by 3-1.

Ascoli, in Serie A a few seasons back, are perhaps galvanising themselves for a return as they remain undefeated this season by beating Mantova at home by 2-1. Former Arsenal youngster Lupoli converted the winner in the 94th minute after they had equalised in the 89th minute.

Last seasons suprise package Grosetto continue to struggle, managing only a draw at home to Gallipoli while Sassuolo again continue to do well, registering four points so far this campaign.

Reggina, perhaps one of the favourites to go up, are sitting on four points after a win and a draw but have a game in hand against Vicenza, who themselves remain unbeaten registering two draws so far. Indeed, it has been a while since the northern outfit have been in Serie A so perhaps it would be nice to see Vicenza back in the big league.

Piacenza, another side that has been in Serie A since 2002, has so far registered one win and one defeat. With a game in hand against Padova away from home a win here could give them the platform to succeed this campaign.

It looks like it is going to be an interesting season in the Cadetti with a number of teams in contention for promotion for Serie A. Torino in all honesty are likely to return, but will one of the classic clubs like Brescia, Piacenza, or Vicenza make a welcome return back to the top flight? Time will tell.

Azzurri Focus: Georgia 0-2 Italy

Italy picked up three points in their world cup qualifier last night in Georgia thanks to a remarkable scenario in which Milan defender Kaladze scored two own goals.

After their confederation cup debacle, Italy have been looking to restore pride. Lippi again omitted Antonio Cassano, but gave starting line up positions to Marco Marchionni, Angelo Palombo and Domenico Criscito. Buffon, Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Chielini, Pirlo, Camoranesi, Rossi and Iaqunita made up the rest of the positions as Lippi continued to revert back to 4-4-2.

It was pretty even in the early going, with both teams exchanging efforts in Tblisi. Camoranesi had an early chance when he headed wide a Marco Marchionni cross, and Chielini sent a header wide to from a Pirlo free kick. However, it was in the second half where the best of the action took place. Indeed, Gianluigi Buffon confirmed once again that he is nothing but world class after stopping a bullet header from six yards out with just one hand in a quite remarkable piece of goalkeeping. Italy sensed the growing danger, and promptly took the lead in Bizzare circumstances moments later. A strong strike from Sampdoria ace Angelo Palombo was headed into his own net by Milan defender Kaladze as Italy prospered from his misfortune. D'Agostino and Quagliarella were introduced and evidence of their previous links ups at Udinese was fully on display as the pair combined and Quagliarella sent a low drive across the face of goal that just went inches wide. However, moments later somehow Kaladze again managed to put the ball in his own net. Domenico Criscito crossed into the box only for Kaladze to somehow volley it into his own net. Clearly, Kaladze after this did not know where to put himself. The comedy continued in injury time as Quagliarella's diving header hit the inside of the left post, rolled across the face of goal to find Iaquinta who on a tight angle again himself hit the post. They should have scored, but they had the three points anyway. Italy face Bulgaria on Wednesday evening in Italy and if they are victorious they will carry to Ireland a four point advantage for the qualifier in October.

100% Proof

Its International break time, so I thought Id take a look at the only remaining teams in Serie A to have a 100% record remaining. Lazio, Juventus, Sampdoria and Genoa are the remaining teams in question. Each one has a great start, but each one does still need to improve if they are to achieve the sort of objectives that they deem feasible this season. Lets start with Genoa, lasts seasons 5th place revelation.

Genoa: wins against Roma (H) and Atalanta (A)
Its been another blockbuster start for them this season. After beating Roma in a early contender for game of the season so far, the Grifone traveled to Atalanta and picked up yet another 3 points. That also is a result to be respected, especially as Inter, Lazio and Roma were well beaten in Bergamo last season. Genoa look very good going forward, have strength in the middle now with Zapater coming in for Motta and seem to have done an able job in defence after holding off Atalanta last weekend and playing well on the counter in their away tie against Odense in the Europa League. Ultimately, theres no question that their good form can continue. But, how good can it get? Its a tought question and the home game against Napoli next will be a further test of their quality. Personally, I feel that this game has draw written all over it and thats where the 100% record will end. Still, they will be there or there abouts this season but they need Crespo to start firing in the goals. Its great when Criscito, Moretti and Zapater weight in with goals but the strikers need to show some muscle now.

Lazio: wins against Atalanta (H) and Chievo (A)
Its been a great start to the season for Lazio, on paper that is. Wins against Inter, Atalanta and Chievo have given the Rome based club a very solid start to the season. The problem is they have looked unconvincing in all of these games. Unconvincing in midfield in particular. The attack has goals written all over it. Mauro Zarate is legitimately one of the best young players, if not the best, in world football. Infact in a league packed with great young talent with the likes of Pato, Hamsik, Balotelli, and Edison Cavani, it was Zarate who shined the brightest last season. Factor into this Julio Cruz, Tomasso Rocchi and Pasquale Foggia then the forward line reeks of creativity. The defence also in the left and right back positions with Kolarov and Lichsteiner also is top class. But, it is the lack Cristian Ledesma in the holding midfield position and the uncertainty in central defence that is of major concern. Will Diakite and Radu come of age in central defence? Time will tell, but if they don't then the Aquile will find it difficult to maintain consistency in this league.

Sampdoria: wins against Catania (A) and Udinese (H)
Sampdoria have quietly gone about their business over the last two weeks picking up maximum points against teams that were very difficult to beat last season. Catania away is a game most teams dreaded, such was the fortress atmosphere that their ground commands. But Sampdoria conquered it quite easily really, and perhaps should have had a greater scoreline in their favour. Against Udinese the win never looked in doubt with their forward line of Cassano and Pazzini, one of the leagues best, shining again. Summer signings were quite, by effective it would seem. Manini, signed from Napoli, netted against Udinese and could weigh in well with Semioli, from Fiorentina, lined up on the other side. All the talk this summer has been about the improvement of Napoli and Palermo, but I wonder whether Sampdoria may spoil their party. If they continue the way they left off in terms of form from last season, they will finish much much higher this year. The defence is arguably the weakest area, but their is goals in this side, five already in the league, so be warned about this side this season.

Juventus: wins against Chievo (H) and Roma (A)
This side needs no introduction. Already they have looked hugely impressive but one senses that Ferrara will be disappointed that the International break came when it did. They return to Rome again to face Lazio next in a top of the table clash, but the two week break may halt their momentum to a degree. Still, Diego has been superb and Melo has settled instantly too. All of this glory so far and without turning to Giovinco, Del Piero or Trezeguet. Indeed, they look lethal in attack and it will take some doing to keep a clean sheet against them. The addition of Grosso has tightened up the defence, but it is not impenetrable by any means. Cannavaro has looked good since his return to Serie A, but he is beatable for pace, take note Mauro Zarate, as is Chielini, which probably explains why their is a rock solid midfield three in front of them.

One things for sure, this list of 100% will be at least reduced to three teams soon enough. Lazio v Juventus is the highlight of week 3 and it wont be easy for either side. Sampdoria will play away at Atalanta, who surely will have to pick up some points somewhen, while Genoa will face a Napoli side looking to move up the table after the money they spent in the summer. Its unlikely that all these four sides will be in the top four places come the seasons end, highly unlikely. But, at least they can enjoy it while it lasts.

Calcio Mercato: The Final round up / Serie A by numbers

With the window in Italy now shut it is time to take a look at who has signed who in the final days , and who has not signed who. Lets start with the league Champions Inter Milan who finished off their mercato last week.

Inter Milan
Wesley Sneijder has arrived at last for them, and impressed on his league debut against Milan at the weekend. It may sound strange after beating AC Milan of all teams, but there will be tougher games to come for Inter and Sneijder so he will have to continue his good form to justify his fee from Real Madrid. However, it remains a big coup for the Beneamata who have done everything coach Jose Mourinho has asked of them. A striker, two midfielders and a defender were asked for and Diego Milito, Thiago Motta, Wesley Sneijder and Lucio arrived alone with Marko Arnautovic, the Austrian teen sensation.

Juventus
After Diego, Felipe Melo, Fabio Cannavaro and Martin Caceres were all signed it was widely believed that Juventus had finished with the transfer market. No so it would seem. A deal was struck with Lyon yesturday to bring Fabio Grosso back to Italy and fill the left back position for Juventus. Their defence now looks rock solid, but their midfield world class with Melo, Sissoko, Camoranesi, Thiago and Marchisio all available to operate behind Diego.

Parma

Parma continued their flurry of late activity by adding a number of quality player to their ranks, suggesting that they may be aiming for more than just survival upon their return to Serie A. Cristian Zaccardo arrives from Wolfsberg and will offer cover at both right back and centre back if required. Forward Nicola Amoruso arrives as well after spells at Torino and Siena in recent years, adding experience and quality to an already decent forward line that contains Alberto Paoloshi and Valeri Bojinov. They have added quality to their midfield as well by signing Torino midfielder Blerim Dzemaili, and with Danielle Galloppa already performing well in the middle of the park for Parma it looks survival could be secured a lot earlier than expected for the Gialloblu.

Elsewhere
Elsewhere Sampdoria added strenght to their forward line by signing Empoli forward Nicola Pozzi on a one year loan deal. With Cassano, Pazzini and youngster Marilungo already playing for Sampdoria their depth in the forward line positions looks assured. Fiorentina traded a player with West Ham. They have picked up young play maker Savio Nsereko in exchange for Portuguese defender Manuel Da Costa. Nsereko is highly rated and the Germany under 21 International has experience in Italy before with Brescia in Serie B.

Disappointment?
AC Milan decided not to add anyone following their 0-4 debacle to Inter at the weekend, much to the distate of their fans no doubt. Lazio also did not strenghern their back line or for that matter offload Goran Pandev or Cristian Ledesma before the window shut. The former has been linked to a January move to Inter or Fiorentina while the latter is likely to stay in the capital and ply his trade their.

SERIE A by numbers!!!
Ok, two weeks have gone so lets have a look at Serie A by numbers during this period.

Top Scorers: 3- Di Natale, 2- Cruz, Hamsik, Quagliarella, Pato, Pazzini, Paoloshi, Diego, Calaio
Highest Scorers: Sampdoria and Inter with 5 goals
Best Attendance: AC Milan v Inter with 78,467 in attendance, Roma v Juve with 57,500 fans
Serie A Attendance: After two rounds 501,658 fans have been through the gates, and this figure excludes the Cagliari home match that does not release official attendances.
100% Record Club: Sampdoria, Juve, Genoa and Lazio all still have 100% records.
Pointless: Catania, Chievo, Atalanta and suprisingly Roma all remain without a point after two rounds
