Calcio Mercato: Cruz opts for Lazio

Its official, Julio Cruz has joined Lazio. The former Inter Milan hitman has joined the Roman club on a one year deal with the option to extend at the end of the season. Its a good signing for Lazio, who slowly but surely are weeding out the deadwood in their squad and adding real quality, especially with Portuguese International winger Eliseu having already arrived. Cruz joins Argentine wonder kid Mauro Zarate up front, along with Goran Pandev and Tomasso Rocchi. However, Lazio's real problems in the last season were in central defence, and by all reports promising Swede Rasmus Bengtsson is set to join today also. Still though the contract issue with Pandev and Ledesma has not been solved and doing so will be key in the coming weeks for the Aquilotti.

Milan to sell Pirlo, Roma Aquilani?

Despite recent reports having stated that neither of these players would leave their respective clubs in the summer both players have today again been linked to moves to Chelsea and Liverpool respectively. Pirlo again has been linked to Chelsea, although its hard to understand when you consider the sheer amount of midfielders that Chelsea possess. For Milan this move could represent a chance to break away from a midfield system dominated by the influence of one man, and allow them to move for Brazilian Hernanes who they have been chasing for a while to replace Kaka. For Roma loosing Aquilani would be a blow, but as he seems to spend most seasons on the injury table maybe it would be better for them to loose him than Mirko Vucinic. Ultimately, both Milan and Roma have struggled in this mercato. Most would feel sorry for Roma's lack of capital and slightly disgusted at Milan's lack of spending, despite being owned by a billionaire. Milan have however been linked to Luis Fabiano again today, with rumours suggesting Sevilla are now prepared to sell.

Inter to move for Van Der Vart

Every summer its the same problem for Inter. Creative midfield. They have a fantastic defence and forward line now with Eto'o, Milito and Balotelli. Quaresma has returned and looked decent, but he may flop again. But still, they refuse to deal with their main problem. Finally though this may be coming to an end. Rafael Van Der Vart has been linked with a move to the Benamata. The hugely talented Dutch International is out of favour at the Bernabeu and has been left out of tonights game with Juventus. Someone has to arrive in this position for Inter, could it be the Dutchman?

Genoa continue their revolution

This is getting ridiculous. Aside from Real Madrid, I can' t think of another club who has been so purposely active this summer. Hernan Crespo, Houssine Kharja, Sergio Floccari and former Boca Junior's and Argentina International Rodrigo Palacio have arrived to already complement a lethal forward line. Valencia right back Emiliano Morretti has arrived to strengthen the defence, promising Porutguese midfielder Pele has also arrived to strengthen a team that beat Juventus and Milan last Season. Still, its not enough for the Marassi faithful. No, Spanish midfield playmaker Alberti Zapater, noted for his great passing ability has arrived from Real Zaragoza today ultimately replacing Thiago Motta who left for Inter Milan. While Milan waste time on the transfer market this summer, Genoa have been the parallel opposite. They will be one to watch in Serie A and the Europa League next season.

Calcio Mercato: Parma stepping up / Roma set to advance

Parma, not content with just making it back to the big time next season, have added former Roma, Chelsea and Real Madrid defender Christian Panucci. Panucci boasts a wealth of experience an Parma have made a very good addition to help them stay up next season. He joins Valeri Bojinov at the Stadio Tardini next season, who will link up with the promising Alberto Paloschi, who carries Serie A experience already after a season with Milan.

Roma Set to advance
Roma responded to an early scare against AA Gent in the third qualifying round of the Europa League to take the first leg 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to Mexes, Totti and Vucinic. Mexes leveled the tie in the 56 minute and the Totti gave il Lupi the lead from the penalty spot in the 73rd. Finally, Mirko Vucinic put Roma's foot firmly in the fourth round as he scored after coming off the bench. Roma were without Aquilani, Juan, and Vucinic for most of the match. This is a good start for the Italian sides in Europe, and in the Europa League I believe it is realistic to have high hopes for Genoa, Lazio and Roma who all could go very deep and indeed win this competition.

Roma to keep Aquiliani, Cruz saga continues...
Roma it would appear are going to hold on to the talented Italy International Alberto Aquilani. The Roman native has when not injured been excellent for Roma, often scoring spectacular goals. Due to a lack of funds in the Roma camp it was believed that they would have to sell before they would buy and Aquiliani was rumoured to be the sacrificial lamb. However, Aquilani's agent has poured cold water on these rumours stating that he would remain in the Italian capital and that he had not been involved in any negotiations with the believed destination that was Liverpool. This could be crucial for Roma. There chances of any silverware were ruined last season due to injuries. If they can keep their current squad together and find a hitman then they could be a dark horse for the Scudetto. Indeed, it now seems a two horse race between Roma and Lazio as to who will end up with former Inter Milan striker Julio Cruz. However, he is the type of Player that will benefit any ambitious side and the likes of Palermo or Napoli could still figure in this saga.

Milan to turn to La Liga duo of Fabiano and Sneijder
Milan, after a dreadful start in pre season have again been linked to Luis Fabiano of Sevilla and Wesley Sneijder of Real Madrid. Milan are in desperate need of quality additions especially if they want to challenge on all three fronts this season and these two players could fit the bill for them.

Calcio News and Calcio Mercato

The Serie A season fixtures have been announced and will start off in mouthwatering fashion. In week two prepare yourself for Milan v Inter, while in week three Juventus will travel to Rome to take on Lazio. Inter will face rivals Roma in week 12 at the San Siro, and the Champions will take on perhaps the Champions in waiting, Juventus, in week 15. Amazingly, Milan will clash with Juventus in week 19, and consequently 38 in the last round of the season which could see one of those teams lift the Scudetto in the face of a major rival. The Rome derby, one of the spectacles of the season will occur in week 15, December the 6th, and it will have a festive feel to it. Week 17, the final round before Christmas, on December 20th contains two blockbuster fixtures as Inter take on Lazio at the San Siro and Milan will travel to Florence to battle against Fiorentina.

Week one: August 22nd
However, it all begins on August 22nd with Catania v Sampdoria, Genoa v Roma, Inter v Bari, Juventus v Chievo, Lazio v Atalanta, Livorno v Cagliari, Palermo v Napoli, Siena v Milan and Udinese v Parma. Currently it is unknown which games will be on the 22nd and which ones on the 23rd. Full fixture are available on Footballitalia.com

Calcio Mercato
Lazio have sold David Rozenhal to Hamburg for a fee of around 5 million euros and Lazio look to re-invigorate their defence after a turgid back line last season. Arsenal's Gallas has been linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico. Parma also have been active today, securing a loan for Valerie Bojinov from Manchester city and Roma's Christian Pannuci is close to moving to the Stadio Tardini also. Juventus also are on the verge of tying up a loan with an option to buy for Barcelona defender Martin Caceres. The talented stopper is extremely versatile with the ability to play at left, right and centre back.

Calcio News

Season Starts
The fixtures for the Serie A season for 2009/2010 will be shown to the world on Wednesday the 29th of July. Of particular interest will be the dates for the Rome derby, Milan derby, Derby D'Italia and Genoa derby. The season will begin on Saturday August the 22nd with an afternoon and evening game on that date and end on May the 16th early, to allow preparations for the 2010 FIFA world cup.

But before that...
Inter Milan will face off against Lazio in Beijing China at the birds nest stadium in the Italian Super cup on the 8th of August. This is a match between the Scudetto holders, Inter Milan, and the Coppa Italia holders, Lazio. Inter will start as favourites but Lazio showed their quality in one off matches last season beating both Milan and Juve, twice, on the way to a Coppa Italia triumph against Genoa based club Sampdoria. Inter will be looking to win their fifth Super Cup having won it previously in 1989, 2005, 2006 and 2008 while Lazio will be looking for their third having won their previous two in 1998 and 2000. In the last match between the two clubs in this event in 2000 Lazio ran out 4-3 winners at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Eto'o touches down
Samuel Eto touched down in Milan this morning ready for a medical with Il Biscione and has signed a five year deal with Inter. The signing has been made official on Inter Milan's official website. The striker has promised the fans to work every day as he always has done, and is aiming for the Champions League.

Rossi to Milan
?
According to goal.com it was announced earlier on AC Milan's official website that Guiseppe Rossi had joined Milan, only for the news to be taken off later on. Two theories have been advanced by goal.com, either that the club site was hacked or that the news was released earlier than it should have been, in other words before a deal had been completed. It does seem rather strange, as Milan have admitted that they are now in the market for Klass Jan Huntelaar and no mention of Rossi has been heard before this incident. Time will tell, and in addition to that Manchester Cities Elano has been rumoured to be moving to the red side of Milan also this summer in the last 24 hours or so.

Calcio Mercato: Cruz set for Roma, Napoli or Lazio?

Roma may be looking to Julio Cruz to solve their striking problem this summer. The Roman club have been in search of a hitman partly due to the retirement of Montella and also to add depth to the front line, which in the past year has been heavily reliant on Mirko Vucinic and Francesco Totti, when fit. Cruz could fit in well in the Roma system, and perhaps could help them be the dark horse in the Scudetto bid. Indeed, a midfield that contains Pizzaro, De Rossi and Aquilani as well as promising french player Menez was often let down by the lack of a pure goal scorer in the last season. Alternatively Goal.com has reported that Roma may be looking to Torino's Rolando Bianchi. Bianchi enjoyed a very solid end to the season demonstrating a very good all round game in which he netted goals from both inside and outside of the box, some quite spectacular. Bianchi has also been linked to Fiorentina.

However, Napoli and Lazio still remain in the mix to sign the Argentine. Napoli may see Cruz as the final part of their forward line as he would fit in between the highly talented and extremely technical players in Quagliarella and Lavezzi. Lazio also remain a possible destination for Cruz, but the ongoing saga with Goran Pandev appears to be wrecking their transfer campaign as until a decision is made as to whether he is staying or going Lazio would appear to be in limbo. Indeed, Lazio have additionally be linked to Bulgarian and Manchester City player Valeri Boijinov. The former Juventus and Lecce man has proven himself as an extremely gifted talent when fit, but he seems injury prone and would be a gamble for the Aquilotti.

Calcio Mercato Roundup: Eto imminent

Palacio arrives
Genoa have completed the signing of Boca Junior's and Argentine International Rodrigo Palacio. The highly rated forward joins Genoa on a four year deal with the intent on breaking into the Argentina squad for the world cup next year. This really is a marque signing for Genoa, who already have added Sergio Floccari, Hernan Crespo and Houssine Kharja to the attack this summer following the departure of Argentine forward Diego Milito to Inter Milan. They are also joined by former Valencia wing back Emiliano Moretti and are said to be tracking promising Spanish midfielder Alberto Zapater from Real Zaragoza. Genoa do look very strong next season and much like Napoli have almost transformed their sides over this summers mercato. Fifth last season, Genoa will be looking to do even better, although the only problem is that the team may take time to gel.

Napoli tie up Morgan De Sanctis
Napoli, as mentioned above, have also been very active this summer. With Siena's wing back Zuinga and Udinese forward Quagliarella signed, as well as playmaker Cigarini from Atalanta, Napoli have further added Italy number three Morgan De Sanctis to their ranks. Perhaps now their final concern for the market will be a classic centre forwarld, Julio Cruz has been mooted for this role.

How Genoa and Napoli may line up next season
Genoa: Rubinho: Moretti, Bocchetti, Biava, Criscito: Jankovic, Kharja, Mesto: Palladino, Floccari/Crespo, Palacio.

Napoli: De Sanctis: Maggio, Santecroce, Cannavaro, Zuinga: Blasi, Cigarini, Hamsik: Quagliarella, Denis, Lavezzi.

Both teams are much improved from last season, and should be able to challenge for a top six place. Can Genoa go better than their fifth place last year, time will tell but top six a European competition again should not be seen as a dissapointment. Indeed, Genoa look very strong and I expect them to have a great run in the Europa League, Quarter finals at least. As Napoli have no European commitments they should do well in Serie A though they may be pushed to challenge Fiorentina, Roma and Lazio who will also be looking towards the top six and higher perhaps.

Other Mercato News

Ibra / Eto'o
The swap deal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eto'o, Hleb and 48 million Euros to Inter looks set to go through within the coming days. Inter coach Jose Mourinho has welcomed the deal as he argues it gives greater balance to his side, and may use the money to purchase Antonio Cassano. This deal is highly likely also if Inter want it, as the recission clause for Cassano is 18 million euros and considering Sampdoria want Amantino Mancini the bait is their for them to seal the deal. However, the money could be used for an ambitious bid for Franck Ribery. The path is arguably clear for Inter to look at the Frenchman now as Madrid look towards Alonso and Fabregas and Chelsea continue their search for a hitman upfront. Indeed this would transform Inter into a different side, one with goal threats from Balotelli, Milito, Eto'o, Ribery, Stankovic and Hleb. Although at this point this is pure speculation it is clear that Inter need a player in the mould of Cassano or Ribery, someone to dictate the play. Juve have theirs in Diego, Milan in a rejuvenated Ronaldinho, who has looked very good in preseason, and if Inter fail to sort this out they could be in for a nasty suprise in Serie A.

Bologna in the money
Bologna fans also may seen an up turn in quality at the stadio Renato Dall'Ara. Instead of perhaps the expected battle of relagation that the fans anticipated this season, the Rossoblu can't expect some quality signings this summer because they have been taken over by Albanese Millionaire businessman Rezart Taci. This is great news for Bologna and for Serie A as they are a club with superb history and fully deserve to be a member of this great division. Already, Antonio Di Natale has been pin pointed as a target.

Viola look to Eboue and Luisao

Following the sale of Felipe Melo last week to Juve, Fiorentina look to invest some of the cash from that deal into their back line by tying up deals for Arsenal right back Eboue and Benfica centre back Luisao. This would be great news for Viola fans as the defence has often been suspect against the better sides in recent years. With Eboue, Gamberini, Luisao and Vargas infront of Frey maybe a Scudetto challenge is not unrealistic at all especially with Mutu, Jovetic and Gilardino up front.

Calcio mercato: Where to now for AC Milan?

First they wanted Edin Dzenko, then Klass Jan Huntelaar, then Luis Fabiano and now it would seem David Trezeguet. Milan's search for a striker continues, and yet at the moment it appears no closer to be solved than it was before the sale of Kaka. Loosing the great Brazilian was undoubtedly a blow, but not as big a blow as any follower of Serie A will tell you. Kaka has over the last two year succomed to his knee injury, and indeed last season spent a considerable chunk of time recovering from that. Factor into that the almost total absence of Gattuso and Nesta, Milan should have done far worse than the joint second place that they finally arrived at upon game 38. However, this transfer window is exactly the time in which Milan need to invest in a few quality signings. The crux of the team is still in essence world class. Pato, Pirlo, Flamini, Nesta, Gattuso when all fully fit are the type of players that can make the difference against any side. Factor into that forward Marco Boriello, another player who spent most of last season out injured and Ronaldinho, who spent most of last season on the bench, it is far from the doom and gloom that the media have portrayed recently.

Return of Dinho
Clearly, Ronaldinho was not a player that Ancelotti wanted last season and as a consequence he spent most of it on the bench or was given a token 15 minutes at the end of most of the games in the Championship run in. When he did play though, he showed he still has the vision and ability to pass like almost no other in world football. This was on display in none other than the second meeting between the two Milan sides when despite going down to a 2-1 defeat the passing by the milanese maistro was outrageous. All this player needs to get back to his best in time in the team to develop his confidence again. He will get that this season now Kaka has gone, and with Leonardo at the helm.

Work to be done
There is still work to be done in this mercato for Milan though, and sometimes I wonder whether Adriano Galliani even realises that it has started yet. A striker is a must. Boriello and Inzaghi are not enough for three competitions despite the fact that they both remain top class strikers. Trezeguet has been mooted in recent days and I believe that this would not be a bad option. Unfit last season due to injury, Trezeguet played not second fiddle but arguably fourth to Del Piero, Iaqunita and Amauri. Now with Giovinco coming through and Diego having arrived space is in short supply on the Juve bench. It would be a good move for David as ultimately he can still get 20+ goals a season and has experience in the Champions League. At 31 years old he still has three good years in him and arguably is the best finisher inside the box in the world on his day. This would suit Milan with Pato and Ronaldinho alongside him in the attack. The relationship between the clubs is good and a deal has been mooted whereby Milan defender Kaladze would go in the opposite direction. However, Milan should not end their. Despite two new defenders a wing back would help as would Sao Paolo midfielder Hernanes. Time will tell, though it is ticking.

Calcio Legends: Beppe Signori

I am not ashamed to admit that here in this post we are talking about one of my favourite players of all time. Guiseppe 'Beppe' Signori is a living legend among the Lazio faithful and still in many peoples book is regarded as the best forward and arguably player that ever stood in front of the Curva Nord. Beppe began his career at Leffe in 1984 before joining yoyo club Piacenza in 1986. He moved onto Foggia in 1989 where he became part of a very attacking team lead by Zendek Zemen, and upon their promotion to Serie A Signori registered 11 goals. However, he moved onto Lazio and became a legend. 107 goals in 152 games for the Aquilotti has ensured this status for years to come, although this was not a status that transcended to a national scale in the form of the Azzurri shirt. Indeed, while playing for Italy Signori was often deployed on the left wing leaving Baggio to take the glory up front, as was the case in his only major National tournament the FIFA 1994 World Cup in the United States. Still, despite his mismanagement at National level Signori did manage 7 goals in the Azzurri colours.

However, he managed far more at Lazio and that resulted in three Serie A top scorers titles in 1993, 1994 and 1996 after moving to the blue side of Rome from Zemen's attacking revelation in Foggia. Yet, he was shunted out of the club after the arrival of Sven Goran Eriksson in 1997. Eriksson brought with him Roberto Mancini and Alen Boksic from Juve, and all of a sudden Il Capitano's place in the team was under threat. After a lack of playing time, and a total lack of respect towards him, Signori moved onto Sampdoria for a rather unsuccessful spell for the remainder of the 1997/1998 season where only 3 goals were registered for the usually ever reliable hitman in 17 games. Many, including myself at the time, thought that his best days had gone and he was ultimately a player in decline, especially as injuries were appearing. How wrong I was, as he moved to the rehabilitation palace of Bologna to turn his career around, just as Roberto Baggio had done the season previous and Marco Di Vaio did in the last Serie A season.

Signori: The Bologna Years
Beppe moved onto Bologna and reaped the rewards of a change of scenery. Indeed, in his first season alone he recaptured his scoring abilities nurtured at Lazio scoring 15 goals in 28 games. His scoring abilities almost helped Bologna onto the UEFA cup final after a narrow defeat in the Semi's that year to French giants Marseille. Success followed success at Bologna as he scored goal after goal registering 15 goals in the 1998/1999 season and 16 in the 1999/2000 campaign in just 23 games due to injury. He played on at Bologna until 2004 and retired from the demands of Serie A that year, moving onto Greek and Hungarian clubs until 2006 when he finally decide to hang up his boots. Despite his scoring success though Beppe never got his hands on a trophy, which for me is an absolute travesty. He should have been treated with the respect he deserved at Lazio and stayed on for the golden period where trophy followed trophy for the blue side of Rome. Still, he is and always will be a Calcio legend.

Serie A 2009/2010: Fiorentina aim for the Scudetto, is it possible?

Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli has ambitiously suggested that his troops can aim for the Scudetto in the coming season. It now seems to be the common trend in Italy to come out with such an outlandish statement, after all it was only a week or so ago that Palermo coach walter Zenga boasted that this club had the same goal. Whether he believed this, or just said it to appease a new set of fans that saw his former side, and bitter rivals Catania, stuff them beyond all expected proportions last season remains to be seen. However, one thing is for certain, and that is that Prandelli's side are now more equipt than ever to mount a more credible challenge. Yes, they have just lost midfield lynch pin Felipe Melo to a bitter and far better assembled rival in Juventus but the 21 million received will be more than enough to find someone capable of filling the void. Indeed, Melo's role may not be so crucial to the viola next season as Prandelli said in the dying embers of last season that figuring how to incorporate talented forward Jovetic into a team that include Mutu and Gilardino would be one of his first tasks for the summer.

Is the team up to the task?
On the face of it yes. They have a starting 11 that on its best day can beat anyone in the league. The 4-1 home win against Roma showed how far they have come as a team in the last season alone, and they will need to make this jump again if they are to overcome Juve, Milan and Inter, teams that they did not beat last season, if they are to win the Scudetto. Players like Kuzmanovic, Montolivo and Vargas are beginning to show their quality and are delivering at key moments. Indeed, Montolivio was one of only a few bright lights for Italy at this summers confederations cup. Depth also is beginning to get deeper, with Lecce striker Jose Castillo signed to the club yesterday and Valencia hitman Fernando Morientes said to be on the way.

The defence arguably though needs greater depth, although Gamberini and Danielli are one of the best defensive partnerships in the league and Vargas really began to explode towards the end of last season. The right back position with Comotto in place is arguably not as strong, and explains why they have been trying to poach Lazio youth product Lorenzo De Silvestri this summer. However, they do posses one of the worlds best goalkeepers in Sebastien Frey. Frey has been magnificent between the sticks in Florence for some time now and does not get the recognition that he deserves. Often last season he was the difference between a defeat and a win.

Scudetto target too ambitious?
They have the ability to do it, but not at the moment the depth to do so whilst focusing on three competitions especially when they want to get out of the Champions League group stages and progress further in the competition. The key for them now will be to see who they add to the squad in the coming weeks. If they can build on their defence and add a quality midfielder then they can certainly close the gap on Inter from the 16 point deficit that became them last season. The problem for them though is that everyone else is getting stronger also, Napoli, Genoa, and Palermo for example, but I guess in the end this will also be a problem for Inter, Juve and Milan also.

Calcio Mercato Roundup

A brief round up tonight on the mercato issues of the day. Lazio are still waiting on Julio Cruz to respond to their offer to join the Aquile, but may have some positive news in the sense that one of the want away trio of Pandev, Ledesma and De Silvestri is highly likely to change their mind in the coming days and sign a new contract with the Rome club. Cristian Ledesma, the highly rated Argentine playmaker is rumoured to be the first of the three to reconcile with the Rome giants. This will be of huge relief to new manager Ballardini if it pans out. Ledesma is one of the best defensive ball winning midfielders in Serie A and if he stays is likely to be played in a deep lying playmaker role with Lazio adopting a 4:2:3:1 formation for next season. Arguably the loss of Ledesma would have been more damaging to the team than the possible departure of Goran Pandev, especially now Argentine wonder kid Mauro Zarate has taken over the mantle as the clubs best player. However, its also a growing possibility that Pandev will remain also.

How Lazio may look next season in 4:2:3:1 Formation

Muslera: Lichsteiner, Diakite, Siviglia, Kolarov: Ledesma, Brocchi: Foggia, Pandev, Zarate: Rocchi

Key subs: Cruz, Eliseu, Mauri, Radu, Rozenhal, Dabo, De Silvestri.

A much improved side from the one that made the Champions League two seasons back with now quality International players now even on the bench. Pandev may still move on, but President Lotito has made it known that if he does an equal replacement will arrive. The Italian cup champions could if they maintain consistency push for that elusive fourth place.

Calcio Mercato: Inter line up Antonio 'Peter Pan' Cassano

I don't usually like to buy into the rumours that fly around the summer mercato. Probably 90% of them never turn out to be true. However, one popped up today that just could not be ignored, even if in the end it turns out to be nothing but an afterthought a few weeks into the season. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic rumoured to be involved in an exchange deal with Barcelona for Samuel Eto'o and 40 million Euros many Interista may have been left slightly disappointed last night. However, some of the disappointment may be lifted by the proposed plan to use the money to bring in other than Antonio Cassano. Since moving to Sampdoria from Real Madrid midway through last season Peter Pan, as he has been dubbed by some, has been simply outstanding. Performances have to be seen to be believed, and it is not unfair to call him the best Italian player in the world by some distance. How he is continually left out of the national squad by Lippi is beyond me, after 12 goals this season and 10 in just 22 games in the previous campaign. But its not the goal per game ratio that defines Cassano, it is the ability to turn any defender inside out, shoot and pass with either foot, score goals that defy believe and ultimately, and perhaps most importantly, he has showed a much more composed attitude in the last campaign to suggest that he is ready again for a big club. Additionally, he will complement Eto'o and Milito perfectly and will help Balotelli grow as a player, as it is known that there is great respect between the two players.

Will this move happen, who knows. But Sampdoria have been interested in Inter winger Mancini and likely know that they can't hold onto Cassano forever. Indeed, the sale of him will give them the funds to add strength to an already very good side, a side that includes Dessena, Palombo and of course Pazzini.

Genoa: Another star arrives?

Rodrigo Palacio, the Boca Juniors star, is on the cusp of signing for Genoa. The forward, who usually plays down the right wing, is a quality player who will add to an already sparkling forward line. Diego Milito may have gone, but Sergio Floccari, Hernan Crespo and talented Siena winger Kharja have arrived. Palacio would add huge depth alongside last seasons stalwarts in Jankovic, Olivera and Sculli. They have also added Valencia right back Moretti to their ranks. This is great for Serie A, alongside the strengthening of Napoli this summer also. Arguably, alongside Fiorentina and Roma, there will be four other challengers for the coveted fourth spot in Genoa, Napoli, Palermo and Lazio.

Calcio Mercato: Ibra and Eto'o exchange on the cards

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's future has been put into doubt again as a deal to take him to Barcelona and send Eto'o, 40 million euros and Alex Hleb in the other direction to Inter. The rumour mills started churning late last night on goal.com and have continued throughout the day all over the web, with a number of sites suggesting that the deal is already done. The latter part is unlikely, but a deal could well be on the cards. Ibra has long stated his desire to move away from Inter over that last few months, but in recent weeks this storm had subsided and it appeared likely that he would stay. However, this deal maybe enough to tempt Inter as the 40 million could be used to resolve the creative midfielder issue, perhaps in the form of Franck Ribery. Still, then again it may not and Inter could well have traded in their best asset to the European Champions, thereby making them stronger and their desired Champions League even more unattainable. It is a real gamble, but they must go deep in the Champions League this year and Eto'o does bring the experience for that. Additionally, wonder kid Balotelli may really develop this season and with Argentine International Diego Milito on board the forward line remains very strong. But without Ibra Inter lack that key cog of a player, much like Messi is at Barca, Kaka was at Milan in 2007, and perhaps Diego will be at Juve next season.

Too reliant on Ibra
Its been said before that Inter are too reliant on Ibrahimovic. Whilst that is partially true, without him who will be the architect of goals at the Biscone. Motta will help with this, as will Balotelli if deployed out on the left side of the forward line, which is expected to be 4-3-3, but if this deal does go through that 40 million will need to be used to address this issue. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Calcio Mercato: Melo signs for Juve, Inter respond with Lucio

One of the transfer sagas of the summer has ended with Felipe Melo finally signing for Juventus. The deal was confirmed last night for a total of £21.5 million. Marco Marchionni moves in the opposite direction and was valued at £4 million in the deal. Many people have suggested that this deal now makes Juve Scudetto favourites, and in many respects they may be right. The depth, up front especially, is there although if any weaknesses are there they are to be found in the right and left back positions.

Juve line up 2009/2010: 4:2:3:1

Buffon: Grygera, Cannavaro, Chielini, De Ceglie: Sissoko, Melo: Camoranesi, Diego, Giovinco: Amauri.

Playing this way would allow Del Piero or Iaqunita to play in the three behind the striker, or alternatively allowing Iaqunita or Trezeguet to alternate with Amauri. This line up could also revert to a 4:3:1:2 with Del Piero, Trezeguet or Iaquinta playing up front alongside Amauri and Camoranesi falling back into the three man midfield.

Marchisio is also a key cog for Juve and will offer great cover, with Zebina, Legrotaglie and Molinaro options for the defence. As mentioned though Juve would be wise to sell off players like Poulson and invest that money into a left or right back, Santos and Santacroce have been mooted for this role.

Inter Respond

Inter however have responded today, signing Bayern Munich and Brazil centre back Lucio. He joins Samuel, Chivu, Cordoba and Burdisso in a very strong back line for Inter. However, winger Maxwell has been signed by Barcelona for £3 million due to the emergence of young star Davide Santon. With Maxwell moving on, Chivu may on occasions be used on the left side also. Barcelona's Alex Hleb may also be on his way to the Biscone on a years loan with an option to buy at the end of the season. Hleb could represent the type of player that Inter have lacked for a while, a midfield architect that the play can be built around. Cambiasso, Muntari and Zanetti are rocks in the midfield, but they don't complement the attacking elements quite so well. Stankovic and new signing Motta offer much more in this respect, but a player with Hlebs creative eye may make the difference in Europe and Serie A this season.

AC Milan still lagging behind

AC Milan are still lagging behind the mercato endeavours of Inter and Juve this summer. In fact, they have some work to do to catch Genoa, Napoli and Palermo in this respect. However, effectively with Nesta returning and Silva and Oneywu they do have three new defenders and Zambrotta and Jankulovski are still highly competitive also. The problem is that they don't have the depth of Inter and Juve yet, which may handicap them in challenging on all fronts. They need a league win, and if they secure Fabiano they may be able to do that. Additionally, Milan have been looking again at Sao Paolo's playmaker Hernanes and according to reports a fee of £10 million could be enough to secure a deal.

Calcio Legends: Roberto Baggio

Step forward Roberto Baggio. The name says it all. Quite simply a technical revelation. A player empitomised by a moment of misfortune, blasting that penalty over the bar in the final of the 1994 world cup final against Brazil. But as we all know, there is much more to the the great man than a submission to pressure in the Rose Bowl Pasadena.

Where it all began
Vicenza was Baggio's first club before he moved onto the Viola, Fiorentina, in 1985. He made his debut against Sampdoria in 1986 and took part in a little piece of history later on in that season by scoring against Napoli in the game in which the Partenepoli won their first Scudetto. He became a legend for the Fiorentina faithful, but turmoil for them was to follow. In 1990 after some magical world cup performances Baggio was sold on to Juventus for what would now equate to 12 million euros. This inspired full scale riots in Florence and the beginning of a bitter rivalry between the two clubs that is still equally vibrant today. Indeed, for Fiorentina the matches against Juventus are without doubt the biggest of the season and will only be more heated this season after the sale of Felipe Melo for 25 million.

Success at Juve

In 1993 he lead Juve to the UEFA cup, scoring a wonder goal against Dortmund, and won the Ballon D'or and Fifa world player of the year award. His first Scudetto win followed in 1995, just reward after that miss in the world cup. Indeed, at USA 94 Baggio was brilliant in the latter stages registering goals in the Semi Final against Bulgaria, Quarter final against Spain and second round against Nigeria just when it looked like the Azzurri were heading home. Indeed, Baggio was the best player in the tournament, far superior to Brazilian counterpart Romario. But it was not to be for Baggio at International level, he returned in France 1998 and scored on two occasions but was underused by Cesare Maldini in preference to new boy wonder Del Piero and Italy paid the price for this. Still at club level he was doing well and moved onto AC Milan who looked to recapture their dominance in Italy after the Van Basten years.

The Milan Years: AC, Bologna, Inter and Brescia

In his first year at AC Milan he helped the to a Scudetto win, but was widely believed to be on the wane and a transfer to Bologna was agreed upon for the beginning of the 1997/1998 season. A wise move in retrospect, as in a world cup year he found a club where first team football would be guaranteed and idolisation no doubt. He had an outrageous season, scoring 22 goals in 30 games in an environment where the team played for him. He went to the world cup in great form, but was not played enough to help a turgid Azzurri past the quarter final stages. He fell tempted to the big time after a stunning season with Bologna, and moved onto Inter Milan completing the set after playing previously for AC Milan and Juventus. Again, he was criminally underused by Marcelo Lippi after the tactician did not see him in his plans. However, he did have two great moments in an Inter shirt. Bringing down Real Madrid 3-1 with two super goals in the San Siro in the 1998/1999 Champions League and also scoring a stunning goal against Parma in a Champions League playoff match. But, rightly, he moved on to Brescia linking up with another legend in Dario Hubner and future star Luca Toni. Indeed, he enjoyed four years at Brescia averaging and goal in every other game, scoring against Juve of course also.

It was a great career for an outstanding player, who continued his outstanding play and ability throughout his playing days. He registered over 300 goals, fifth highest in Italian history, and was given a standing ovation by a packed San Siro on his last game against Milan. A great send off, at a great stadium, for a living legend. Grazia Roberto.

Please, check out the videos in the Serie A legends section down the page. Roll back the years, and hold back the tears for the great man.

Monday's Mercato news / pre season matches begin

Brazilian forward Luis Fabiano is edging closer to AC Milan for an 18 million euro fee it would appear from reports seen on goal.com. The Brazilian is apparently keen on the move to the San Siro to link up with fellow Brazilians Alexandre Pato and Ronaldinho. Despite loosing Kaka, if Milan acquired the Brazilian's services they would boast a potent forward line that would additionally include Marco Boriello, who had an outstanding season for Genoa two years back but was beset by injury for the majority of the last season. Personally, I feel this would be a good move for Milan, and one that greatly increases their chances of success. With new defenders Thiago Silva and Oguchi Onyewu, and with Alessandro Nesta returning it would be unwise to underestimate Milan's chances of success next season.

Elsewhere in mercato news Genoa continue their mini Real Madrid like revolution. Crespo, Kharja, Pele from Porto, and Sergio Floccari have already arrived but it would appear that this is not enough. Now it would appear they are chasing Boca Juniors forward Rodrigo Palacio and holding midfielder Sebastian Battaglia. These would be ambitious signings as both have played for Argentina in the past and are quality players. As well as the new signings, they would join Sculli, Jankovic, Palladino, Criscito, and defender Bocchetti in a very strong outfit. It would not be unfair to say they were the revelation of last season under excellent tactician Gian Piero Gasperini.

Lazio fly in first pre season friendly match whilst Roma struggle
Lazio began there preparations for the new season by beating local side Auronzo 10-0 in impressive style. Goran Pandev weighed in with a hatrick whilst Tomasso Rocchi scored a brace along with left back Alexandr Kolarov. City rivals Roma could only manage a draw against Czech side Viktoria Plzen, and were actually trailing at one point but pulled level through an own goal. Protests blighted the training exercise though, as a number of the 2,500 watching urged President Rosella Sensi to sell the club.

Calcio Mercato: Nedved Retires, Palermo sign 'new Kaka'

Palermo have completed the signing of impressive Argentine Javier Pastore from Argentine side Huracan on a five year deal. Its been reported that he apparently turned down offers from Manchester United, Inter Milan and Arsenal to join the Southern side. This is a great move for Palermo, it will take the whole creative burden off Trequartista Miccoli and allow him to play upfront with Palermo's star player last season, Edison Cavani who registered 14 league goals. With Pastore in the side, expect Cavani's total to increase.

Can Palermo really challenge for the league?
Last week former Inter legend and new Palermo coach Walter Zenga stated he wanted Palermo to win the Scudetto. It would seem a ridiculous claim, but after Genoa's progression last season every midtable side now is looking to take the step to the next level. For me, Palermo would do well to make European football, especially with Genoa, Napoli and Lazio all looking stronger and not to mention the usual top of the table contingent. Who knows though, if they start the season well then anything is possible.

Nedved to retire, from Serie A
Pavel Nedved will no longer grace the stadiums of the Italian league. The 36 year old has hung up his boots on Italian soil for the last time, leaving offers from Lazio, Inter and a management capacity job from Juventus on the table. The link to Inter was surprising given the hatred between them and Juventus and would have damaged a brilliant legacy at Juventus, without doubt one of the world's biggest clubs. However, all that is irrelevant now and it has been suggested that Nedved may continue playing on in either the MLS or the United Arab Emirates.

Without doubt, one of the best players, if not perhaps the best in some peoples eyes, that the world has seen in the last 15 years or so. As a player he was complete. He had a vicious shot, with either foot, and was great in the air. He had a tireless work rate, and was not shy to the odd heavy tackle or two. He lifted the much coveted Ballon'dor in 2003, despite being suspended for the Champions League final that year against AC Milan. One can't help but wonder what would have been in that match had he played, and it certainly would have been much more difficult for Milan to have won. Still, he did taste European success with Lazio in the last edition of the Cup Winners Cup in 1999, with him of course scoring the winning goal from outside the area, and again later that year in the European Super Cup against Manchester United where his side Lazio ran out 1-0 winners. When he moved to Juve to replace Zidane as the midfield architect, many were not convinced. Yet he filled the great mans boots greatly, leading Juve to two straight Scudetto's in 2002 and 2003 to end the dominance of the Rome clubs, something Zidane could not do. Still, all good things come to an end. Good buy Pavel, thanks for the memories. Brazilian wonder Diego now replaces Nedved. He is certainly up to the task and is a very similar player. Will we speak of him in the same vein in ten years time?

The best of Pavel Nedved

Calcio Mercato: Matuzalem signs

Lazio have completed the signing of Francelino Matuzalem from spanish club Real Zaragoza for 6.5 million euros. Juan Pablo Carrizo goes the other way on loan, leaving Lazio after a disappointing season. Matuzalem's season with Lazio was injury plagued, but once he returned he showed his quality, the highlight being a brilliant through ball for Tommaso Rocchi to score against Juventus in the coppa Italia semi final in Rome to send 50,000 Lazio fans mental. He is a player who undoubtably adds to the quality of the team. Foggia, Zarate, Kolarov, Lichsteiner and Muslera are the players that the team should be built around if Ledesma and Pandev leave and Matuzalem, and of course Eliseu, are a great start and if he stays fit will contribute in terms of passing and goals I am sure.

In other mercato news Luciano Zauri has completed a loan move from Lazio to Sampdoria. The talented right back simply had no room to go back to Lazio with Lichsteiner and De Silvestri occupying the right back position. A move ultimately is good for both clubs as it is money in Lazio's pocket and further quality in Sampdoria's squad. Samp were a team who got left behind last year and if they don't add more then Palermo, Lazio, Genoa, Fiorentina, Roma and Napoli will simply stretch further ahead of the 1991 Italian Champions in their quest to close the gap on the big three. All in all, a good signing for Samp and he joins Napoli's Mannini in the Doria team for next season.

Additionally, Fabio Caserta has left Lecce to join Atalana. The promising 20 year old joins Robert Aquafresca and now Simone Tirribochi in the Atalanta line up for next season. The Bergamo side will not be short on goals in the next campaign even after the loss of Sergio Floccari and Luca Cigarini it would seem. Can they finish in the top ten, or go even better. Probably not with Genoa, Napoli, Lazio and Palermo and Udinese looking likely to complete the top half with the likes of Milan, Juve, Inter, Fiorentina and AS Roma. Lets wait and see, I am drooling for the start of the season

Calcio Mercato: Felipe Melo deal done?

It would appear that Fiorentina and Brazil sensation Felipe Melo is due to complete his move from Fiorentina to Juventus tonight. Juventus it would seem will send Marco Marchionni in the opposite direction along with 21.5 million euros making the deal worth 25 million in total. This will benefit both teams in the long run. Juventus now have a world class midfield with Diego, Sissoko, Camoranesi and Marchisio in the mix, not to mention Giovinco, alongside Melo. For the Viola, although this sale will be a dissapointment they now have a substantial transfer kitty available and a pretty decent player in Marchionni.

In other news Napoli have continued their mercato revolution. So far quality additions in Quagliarella, Cigarini and goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis have arrived. But it would seem that this was not enough. Today promising defender Zuinga from Siena has arrived as well as fellow defender Campagnaro from Sampdoria. Napoli join Genoa, Juventus and Inter in being in my view the best active teams on the market in Italy so far. Milan, Lazio, Roma and Fiorentina still have work to do if they are to keep up the pace. However, the market is young and there is plenty of time.

Inter Milan: Campioni 17

Inter Milan secured their 17th Scudetto in the championship just passed in some style. Once again they were the dominant team in Serie A and finished 10 points clear of both Juventus and AC Milan. It was of course their fourth title in a row, but next season will be much more difficult, as a transfer last night to bitter rivals Juventus confirmed. We will go into that later.

The League Campaign

Inter barley put a foot wrong. Grinding out wins, unbeatable at home and the magic of Zlatan, Maicon and Julio Cruz lead them to the title. Other teams were more spectacular and better to watch, Milan on their day for example, yet nobody could mirror Inter's consistency. Additionally, when they needed to deliver against the big Serie A sides they did just that. Home to Juventus, they won. Home to Milan, they won. Away to Roma in an early season test, they won. Home to a tough Fiorentina side, they won. A pattern has emerged here. Much credit must go to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His 25 goals, some out of this world and some out of this universe, lead them to the title and him to the top of the top scorers chart.

Has Mourinho improved Inter?
Yes, in my view he has. They are a tougher side than the one that won last season. Muntari has been an excellent buy and towards the end of the season was linking up with big Ibra really well. They appear mentally tougher as well. Last season after loosing to Napoli in the league they almost blew the Championship in the seasons closing stages, but not this time. Again they lost in the cauldron of the San Paolo, but this time they regained their composure and wraped the league up.

Mario Balotelli and Davide Santon
Who says that youngsters don't get chances in big sides? Indeed, Inter have introduced Santon and continued with Balotelli this season to great effect. The latter will be, if he keeps his head, one of the best forwards in the world in the next few years, whilst Santon shows composer and class well beyond his 18 years. Two players that would have usually cost big spenders Inter millions, have cost nothing through a youth policy that is growing favourably for the Italian giants.

Faliure in Europe
It was an all told failure this season from start to finish. Failure to top their group and invite the danger of holders Manchester Utd saw them exit early again. Ibra needs more support on this stage, and a likely return to 4-3-3 with Balotelli and now Milito involved will give him just that. Factor into this new signing Thiago Motta and Inter may have found the midfielder than can help them push on further into this competition. However, to win it they may need more. A real creative genius like Franck Ribery, maybe they can find one in their new prosperous youth system.

Can anyone stop an 18th Scudetto?
Yes, now Juventus can. Inter fans wont like to hear this, but the signing of Felipe Melo now completes Juve's midfield, which with Diego, Sissoko, Marchisio and Camoranesi now is arguably the best in Serie A, and one of the best in Europe. Additionally, although slow of the mark so far this transfer campaign, Milan, if they sign prospected purchases in Huntelaar and Fabiano will not be far behind a Scudetto push. Roma and Fiorentina are perhaps the only others that can Challenge, as Lazio, although cup holders, are too inconsistent to at the moment although they may have the ability to beat some of the big sides. Roma, without the Champions League, could focus their energy on the league and they did go close two seasons ago whilst the prospect of a Fiorentina challenge has been developing for some time.

Juventus: Refurbishment complete, almost

Whatever way you look at it, and whoever you support, Serie A is just not complete without Juventus. Its like having a toaster without any bread, its not right. Rightly or wrongly they spent a season in the cadetti and last year completed a solid season finishing a respectable third behind AS Roma and Champions Inter. This season passed they improved that to a decent second place and the second round in the Champions League after going out, perhaps undeservedly after a ridiculous sending off, to semi finalists Chelsea. But that does not tell the whole story.

The League Campaign

When Juve were good, they were very good. The 4-1 away win in Rome over Roma, the 4-2 win at home to AC Milan. However, they just fell short of Inter's consistency throughout the season. Silly defeats at home to Palermo and Cagliari with points also dropped against Lecce, Atalanta and Reggina ensured Ranieri got the sack, and frankly rightly so. He was not the man to take them to the elite level of Europe's elite once again, and silly tactical and personnel decisions throughout the season eventually saw him shown the exit. In comes Ciro Ferrara, and unknown commodity, much like Pep Guardiola at Barcelona last season. Its a gamble no doubt, but Juve's directors seem to be giving him the tools to compete for the Scudetto and last four in the Champions League.

The new players
Brazilian revelation Diego has arrived. Quite how it would appear no other team in Europe was to compete for his signature was beyond me. Maybe an agreement has been their for a while, but this is a player who is capable of the sublime and will be a perfect replacement for Nedved down the left channel. Great feet, a lethal shot and genius passing give Juve a player who can be as influential as Ibrahimovic was for Inter last year, or Kaka was for Milan in 2007. In other words, world class. The defence has been tightend also, Fabio Cannavaro has arrived and will bring a sense of stability to the back line and additional options to the brilliant Chielini and robust Legrottaglie. However, additional players are needed. The midfield requires a central playmaker. The move for D'Agostino appears dead in the water but Fiorentina revelation Felipe Melo could be moving to Turin to fill this hole. Additionally, a left back is required. Andre Santos could be the man to fill this position after a good showing for Brazil and the confederations cup, Fabio Grosso has been linked also. Rumour has it they are looking for a forward to. With Giovinco, Amauri, Del Piero, Iaquinta and Trezeguet on the books one questions the need for this, but with Trezeguet rumoured to be on his way out Goran Pandev is rumoured to be on his way in. This has been met with some resitence for the Juve faithful, but he will not be first choice and perhaps satisfied to offer cover off the bench at a European giant like Juve.

Seasons expectations

The signing of Diego was a real coup, and factor into this the potential signing of Melo then Juve arguably have the best midfield in Italy, and one of the best in Europe. They have in Diego found the player that Inter has craved for, a creative midfielder than can assist the attack with devastating effect. It looks like a very good side, and I believe a Scudetto challenge is well on the cards.

Calcio Mercato Roundup

Another busy week in the world of mercato has seen several speculated deals confirmed. Motta has also completed his move to Inter, and will join former team mate Diego Milito in the benemata ranks. However, it appears that the proposed deal for Twente sensation Marko Arnatovic to Inter has fallen through due to Twente not willing to loan out the player. This could leave the door open for Lazio who have mentioned interest before in Arnatovic, and with a number of clubs unwilling to buy because of a current foot injury the Aquilotti could use this to their advantage and strike for a deal. Lazio have also joined Napoli and Fiorentina in the battle to acquire the services of Inter Milan's Julio Cruz, a player who would add depth to either of these three clubs.

Milan go Hunting
Meanwhile across in the red and black half of Milan their search for a hitman continues and they may have found a solution in the form of Real Madrid player Klass Jan Huntelaar. Here is a player who has no trouble in finding the back of the net and would fit in perfectly at Milan and will likely move on a loan deal. He is the type of player AC have lacked in a while, a forward who can get 25 goals in a season without too much trouble, and taking into consideration the relationship between Real and Milan a deal is very likely. However, Milan it would appear are not only after the 'Hunter'. They still are intent on landing Brazil forward Luis Fabiano to their forward line at a decent price. The reported 30 million euro buyout clause is high for a player aged 28, and they will look to get a fee much lower if possible.

Lazio watch: Pandev and Ledesma issue roles on
Are they going, are they staying? Im not even sure the Lazio fans, like myself, care anymore either way. Why? because we all wanted a quality centre back this summer, not to search for players in positions that we though we had filled. Pandev still looks the most likely to leave, although he has somewhat shot himself in the foot by admitting this before the season even ended. Indeed in recent days, the pair have both backtracked somewhat admitting as much that they could stay at Lazio. In my eyes, this would only be acceptable if they were to sign new contracts, as opposed to leaving on a free transfer in the not so distant future.

Juve continue their search for a central midfielder
And the search here goes on. D'Agostino, Melo, Diarra, and Cristian Ledesma have all been mentioned but still the whole next to Mommo Sissoko has not been filled. They made the error of signing Poulson last season, but at least this time in many respects they seem to be putting much though into who arrives. It has to be said though, Juve look ready for a title challenge. With a midfield that contains Camoranesi, Diego and Sissoko it is already very competent, and one of the aformentioned names could make it the best midfield in Italy.

Roma look for a hitman
Its no secret that the cash has dried up on the red side of Rome, and while injuries could be to blame for a poor season just passed they do need someone to put the ball into the back of the net and to take the pressure of Totti. Thus they need a bargain, and perhaps Ruud Van Nistelrooy could help them out here. They had been linked to Sheva, but that rumour seems to have died a death.

Lazio season review: Aquilotti flying high again, what next?

A disappointing league season was put into shadow thanks to a glorious Coppa Italia campaign that resulted in a fifth title for the Aquilotti and a ticket into the inaugural Europa League next season. Thus, our Lazio are back where they belong, back in Europe. Some may question that when they only finished 10th in the league, but performances against Juve and Milan in the Coppa suggest that they can do Italy proud in Europe next season. Indeed, depsite only finishing 10th in the league, there were many positives for the laziale out their to focus on. Finally, Pasquale Foggia was given the time to show his quality down the Stadio Olimpico wings, quality that Delio Rossi initially appeared to doubt. In the end Rossi had no option but to play the Italy international and the fruits of this decision were their to be seen in the creativity that the little wizard produced week in week out. Alexander Kolarov also showed he has the potential to be a world class wing back, he gets forward well and can add to the offensive side of the Lazio game, much as Maicon does at Inter. Kolarov does though need to improve on the defensive side of his game, and as the season progressed he did.

Seasons discovery
Without doubt though, the discovery of the season was Mauro Zarate. The young Argentine showed glimpses of absolute brilliance that suggests he can become one of the best strikers in the world. Some of his footwork and the goals he scored defied belief at times, and the goals he scored in the derby and in the Coppa Italia final and semi will have him written into laziale legend. 16 goals in all competitions saw him top the clubs scoring charts and I think the fans will be justified in expecting a lot more next season as after all this was his first season in Serie A.

What next for Lazio

The fans will expect more from Lazio now they have won their first trophy for five years. Indeed, Lazio may get the chance to win another in the European Super cup on August 8th although the will have to get past Inter Milan first. Still, what really is required is a competitive Serie A season after finishing 12th and 10th in the last two seasons. They have taken steps to address this already after completing the signing of Portuguese international Eliseu for a bargain fee. However, problems have arisen already after key players Pandev and Ledesma have requested transfers to pastures new. They are not irreplaceable, but it forces club president Lotito to look for more holes to fill in the team, as really finding a quality centre back should have been the focus. Brazilian central mid Matuzalem does look like joining though after a decent loan spell. One thing Lazio also need to do is to trim the squad down, well over 40 players deep, to raise some additional transfer capital and of course cut back on wages.

What can Lazio fans expect next season
So long as any players who leave are competently replaced then Lazio can I believe look forward to a very decent run in both cup competitions as they seem to be able to rise to the big occasions. As far as the league goes then if they can achieve greater consistency from new manager Davide Ballardini then challenging for a top seven finish should not be beyond them, but with the likes of Napoli and Genoa re-enforcing and with three competitions in the offing then it will be difficult, but not impossible, to be successful in everything.
